When shopping for an in-ground sprinkler system, my good friend Dennis secured estimates from quite a few companies. Dennis is a persistent negotiator. He always does it with a smile and you can ‘hear’ the smile in his voice.
So after he carefully went over all the numbers, he zeroed in on one specific company and, with his usual smile, asked for a lower price. He immediately received a better price, but felt that since the company had dropped the price so quickly, they clearly had a degree of flexibility. He continued to negotiate and after repeated back and forth, they agreed to lower the price even more. From an original $2,500 estimate, the final price was $2,250.
The bottom line: Always ask for what you want. Be persistent. And do it with a smile.
